Multi-Sensory Room@NYU
ABOUT
The Multi-Sensory Room Design project, developed in partnership with the NYU Ability Project, creates an accessible calming space for students with diverse mental health needs. The room is located on the IDM floor, and integrates custom sensory elements including ambient lighting, personalized scents, soundscapes, and guided meditation programs to provide a therapeutic environment that supports student well-being.

The Results
Over a three-month period, the project launched three pop-up installations that engaged 100 participants and invites each visitor to experience a personalized 5-minute session.

Design Process
We designed the space around four integrated sensory elements to address different aspects of stress and anxiety. Before entering the space, participants were invited to pick a personalized scent from the scent palette we made. We implemented user-controlled LEDs to create ambient lighting that let people choose colors and brightness based on what feels right at that moment. The soundscape library includes everything from nature sounds to guided meditation; some people find peace in ocean waves while others need structured breathing exercises. Finally, we made some 3D-printed fidget toys because many people process stress through movement and touch; having tactile objects provides an outlet for restless energy while staying present in the space.
Participant Review

We did the guided meditation together and loved the scents. Alex didn't want to go to class after. He especially loved the fidget spinners!

I just finished a stressful presentation and this really helped me destress. I think it would be really nice to have this installation here permanently.

The soundscape was so relaxing. I honestly needed this.
